In the memory of an angel, Renaud Capuçon’s Berg Concerto on Virgin Classics

Posted on 21 April 2013 by admin

Alban Maria Johannes Berg (February 9, 1885 – December 24, 1935) was an Austrian composer. Berg’s Violin Concerto was written in 1935. It is probably Berg’s best-known and most frequently performed instrumental piece.  The event that spurred him into writing this violin cncerto was the death by polio of 18-year-old Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma Mahler (once Gustav Mahler’s wife) and Walter Gropius. Berg then write the concerto, which he dedicated “To the memory of an angel.”  Renaud Capuçon (born 27 January 1976) is a French classical violonist, this release is delivering incredible artistic interpretations, BBC Music Magazine’s opinion is clear-cut :  “No version of the Concerto more compellingly engages the listener in the tragedy oft he Manon story than this.” Renaud‘s interpretation in Berg Concerto A la Mémoire d’un Ange (In the memory of an Angel), recorded with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Daniel Harding, is definitely “The Best Recording” among “so many strong, viable alternatives”.
