Composer, conductor and writer Boulez was born 26 March 1925, in Montbrison, Loire, France.  By now he remains one of the leading exponents of 20th-century music. His compositions have made a contribution to musical culture, and his advocacy of modern and postmodern music has been decisive for many. From 1976 to 1995, Boulez held the Chair in “Invention, technique et langage en musique” at the Collège de France. In 2001, he was the recipient of the Grawemeyer Prize for music composition, for his work Sur Incises. In 2002, he was awarded the Glenn Gould Prize for his contributions. In 2004, with festival director Michael Haefliger, he founded the Lucerne Festival Academy, a summer orchestral institute for young musicians, dedicated to music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.[18] The resident professors are members of the Ensemble intercontemporain. On 26 March 2015 Pierre Boulez reaches his ninetieth year. He has been an exclusive artist with Deutsche Grammophon for over 20 years, his recording legacy with the label is immense. This a celebration of his birthday with a 44-CD box set of his complete DG 20th century music recordings is an aspect of his work that lies at the heart of his achievement.

The 57th GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award to Pierre Boulez

Posted on 20 December 2014 by admin

The award will be officially acknowledged at the Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles in February. It is not known whether Boulez will attend.

Boulez is one of a raft of musicians to be recognised for their contribution to music over their lives. The other honourees include the Bee Gees, George Harrison (posthumously) and jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter.

“This year we pay tribute to exceptional creators who have made prolific contributions to our culture and history,” said Neil Portnow, CEO of the Recording Academy. “It is an honour and a privilege to recognise such a diverse group of talented trailblazers, whose incomparable bodies of work and timeless legacies will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.”

Boulez, who is one of the most influential names in contemporaryclassical music, has previously won 26 Grammys, most recently in 2005 for his recording of his own work Le Marteau sans maître.

Pierre Boulez’s 10 CDs box-set on DG, his Complete Works

Posted on 20 May 2013 by admin

Pierre Boulez ( born 26 March 1925) is a French composer, conductor and pianist.  In 1954, with the support of Jean-Louis Barrault, he founded the Domaine musical in Paris – one of the first concert series dedicated entirely to the performance of modern music. His masterpiece Le marteau sans maître (The Hammer without a Master) for ensemble and voice is a  “keystone of 20th-century music”, and one of few works of advanced music from the 1950s to remain in the repertoire. He has made a decisive contribution to the development of music in the 20th century and inspired generations of young musicians with his pioneering spirit.

This 10 CD box-set will be released on July 16, 2013.

Mahler: Das Klagende Lied

Pierre Boulez’s new rendering of Mahler, Das Klagende Lied

French conductor Pierre Boulez is particularly famed for his polished interpretations of  classics, such as  Gustav Mahler. In 2010, Boulez finished recording his 15-year, multi-orchestra Mahler cycle for Deutsche Grammophon. His earlier version of Das Klagende Lied is in 1970. Here is the record in the concert that opened the 2011 Salzburg festival, the performance has both spaciousness and finely focused detail and texture, with first-rate solo contributions from soprano Dorothea Röschmann and contralto Anna Larsson.
