The new recording of Haydn’s String Quartets Op.33, London Haydn Quartet on Hyperion

Posted on 12 June 2013 by admin

The Op. 33 String Quartets were written by Joseph Haydn in the summer and Autumn of 1781 for the Viennese publisher Artaria, and its recordings are more than we can count. The London Haydn Quartet is rapidly developing a reputation as being one of the most innovative and exciting quartets around the classical world. Described by The Times as ‘playing with clarity and character’, they specialise in Haydn, playing with classical bows and gut strings. The ensemble’s delicacy of nuance and sensitivity to harmonic color, treating the listener as a privileged eavesdropper” (Gramophone).

Russian, and later French and American composer, pianist and conductor Igor Stravinsky ( 1882 – 6 April 1971) is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. This is a new album from the Gramophone Award-winning team of Steven Osborne, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ilan Volkov on Hyperion recording , the album presents the complete music for piano and orchestra by Igor Stravinsky, include the Concerto in D for string orchestra. The taut rhythmic brilliance of this music is perfectly suited to the particular artistry of these performers. Volkov’s mastery of Stravinsky’s neo-classical idiom is clear from the ecstatic critical response to his recordings of many of the composer’s orchestral works.

Romantic Théodore Dubois, The Piano Concerto Vol.60 on Hyperion

The Romantic Piano Concerto Vol.60 on Hyperion

François-Clément Théodore Dubois (24 August 1837 – 11 June 1924) was a French composer, organist and musicteacher. His music  includes ballets, oratorios and three symphonies, he wrote many religious works, and had considerable hopes for a successful career on the operatic stage. This Concerto-capriccioso of 1876 seems like a preliminary study in the style of such composers as Weber and Mendelssohn, whereas the highly Romantic Concerto in F minor (1897) is reminiscent of Saint-Saens. On this album French pianist Tiberghien is accompanied by Andrew Manze and the BBC Scottish Symphony in three works by Théodore Dubois that present a captivating panorama of the composer’s stylistic evolution.
