Music makes patients less anxious and reduces pain

Posted on 20 August 2015 by admin

Music even had beneficial effects if the patients were under general anaesthetic. The research, carried out by scientists at Queen Mary University, London, found that patients were in less pain, were less anxious and even needed less pain relief after surgery if they listened to music before, during and after their operation.

The results were published in The Lancet – and the lead author of the study, Dr Catherine Meads, herself found music to be beneficial when she was recovering from hip surgery – specifically Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon .

Dr Meads said she was surprised to discover that music had a beneficial effect even when the patient was under anaesthetic.

“Music is a non-invasive, safe and inexpensive intervention that can be delivered easily and successfully.”

Verbier Festival: Best of 2014 will be available in a 2-CD set

Since 1994, the high-profile, high-altitude festival in the Swiss Alps has been a breath of fresh air for musicians and audiences alike, each year attracting a who’s who of classical music without losing the intimacy and community fostered in this uniquely inspiring locale.

Twenty years on, Warner Classics has captured this unique atmosphere of music-making with a double album of thrilling highlights from last year’s festivities — one of the first official Verbier albums ever to be released.

Pianists Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Daniil Trifonov and Jan Lisiecki feature along with cellists Mischa Maisky and Gautier Capuçon, headlining a long list in which living legends rub shoulders with the younger generation of luminaries.
